 Watford Congregational Church registers
Watford Congregational Church was formed in 1877 and established in Clarendon Road at the junction with St John's Road. In 1972 the Church became part of the United Reformed Church and amalgamated with St Stephen's Presbyterian Church as Watford United Reformed Church. In 1976 Watford URC moved to new premises in Langley Road, and was renamed St Thomas' United Reformed Church.

The Church's minute books have been deposited with Hertfordshire County Council Archives, but the registers of baptisms, marriages and burials were retained for transcripts to be made. The transcripts accompany this note, and the registers have been deposited with HCC.

Baptisms 1877-91 (60) and burials 1881-86 (32) were listed within the first minute book. Baptisms 1889-94 (10) are recorded in a Church Statistics book, and baptisms 1895-1908 (41) in a Members Register.
From 1910 records of births, marriages and deaths were kept in registers published by the Congregational Union of England and Wales. The format of the registers varies slightly from book to book. The marriage records are similar to the official registers but do not include witnesses.

From 1910 records of births, marriages and deaths were kept in registers published by the Congregational Union of England and Wales. The format of the registers varies slightly from book to book. The marriage records are similar to the official registers but do not include witnesses.
The first register contains baptisms April 1910 - April 1953, marriages June 1910 - April 1925 and burials January 1910 - September 1922. The second register contains marriages from April 1925 - August 1946. The third register has baptisms from August 1953 - April 1972 and two marriages (October 1945 and April 1946), with a note that subsequent marriages are recorded only in the official registers. In total there are 535 baptisms, 217 marriages and 146 burials. Four official marriage registers recording 320 marriages span June 1946 - September 1972.

There is no record of burials after 1922. Although funeral services may have been at the church, burials will usually have been at the Vicarage Road Cemetery or North Watford Cemetery (opened in 1931) on North Western Avenue, and cremations at Wests Herts Crematorium (opened in 1959).

The transcripts
The transcripts adopt a standard layout for each event for all years, without regard to the format of individual registers. The layout is influenced by the constraints of space across the page.
The transcripts from the Church's registers have all the information recorded, except the name of the officiating minister. The transcripts from the official marriage registers also omit the names of witnesses.

The marriage register for 1946-June 1953 gives some details of the preceding marriage of divorcees; later registers state "previous marriage dissolved". For both types "condition" is shown in the transcript as "div" and any details of the previous marriages are shown in the "occupation" column. Marriages from May 1970 include Presbyterian marriages, St Stephen’s Presbyterian Church having been sold. These are shown in italic print.
The transcripts follow the originals in the varying use of abbreviations for street names and some other words. Where the correct reading of a person's name has been uncertain, the spelling used matches the spelling in the General Register Office indexes.

Acknowledgements
The transcript was made by Vernon Lane who records his thanks to Marion Hornby and Stella Lane for their help.

NB This online version of the transcript only includes baptisms up to 1913 and marriages up to 1938 for reasons of Data Protection.
