This book had its origin in the appendices to The Blind of London, reprinted from "The Times", with additions, by Edmund C. Johnson (1860). The first edition was published in 1876, the second edition in 1886, the third edition in 1895 and the fourth edition in 1910. Appendices to the fourth edition were published in 1910, 1912 and 1916.
The book covers Great Britain and Ireland. There are 5254 names in total, the vast majority being annuitants. The remainder are the names of c.170 founders, trustees, secretaries, clerks, etc.
