 Hayes New Burial Ground
By 1900 the graveyard at St Mary’s Hayes, Middlesex was reaching capacity and so a
new section of land was consecrated and came into use. The burials were recorded in the parish register, which is now held at the London Metropolitan Archives, but this gives no indication of the plot locations.

Only the most affluent of the parish were able to afford tombstones and monumental inscriptions. Many families just had simple wooden crosses or even no marker. With time these have decayed or rotted away so the actual sites are unmarked. A further complication comes from the fact that the graveyard is now closed for burials. It has been adopted by the local authority, the London Borough of Hillingdon. The area of this part of the cemetery is overgrown and receives little or no attention from the local authorities.

This database has been compiled from the gravedigger’s book, a document that was prepared at the time of the funeral. It records the burials in row order, giving the depth of each grave and the number of bodies buried in it. The graves are supposed to be in straight lines but due to the overgrowth it is difficult to be certain of exact positions. The remaining gravestones give specific reference points.

The database

I have prepared an alphabetical listing of the names linked to the graves. The rows are designated by the letter R and the graves by a number after the decimal point so R02.04 is the fourth grave in row 2 and that of Ann Brewer aged 68 years.

I have managed to check some of the entries but further notes should be made by consulting either the parish register or the records of Births, Marriages and Deaths held by the General Register Office. I have taken care in this work but any errors are solely my responsibility. I thank the Rector Fr Peter Homewood and the Churchwardens for permission to access these records.
